Invitation to Attend

Conference Theme | Call for Papers | Important Dates | Programme Committee

The New Zealand Cartographic Society in association with the Spatial Information Research Centre is proud to announce the fourth National Cartographic Conference - GeoCart'2008 and the 20th Annual Colloquium SIRC 2008. The Conference will be held at the outstanding facilities of The University of Auckland, 1-3 September 2008.

GeoCart'2008 aims to bring together a wide cross section of the cartographic and geospatial community to promote new techniques and a greater understanding of the possible applications for spatial information in the future.

The Conference will host the National Cartographic Exhibition, including a Children's Map Competition, and GeoExpo'2008 - a Commercial Exhibition focused on the latest innovations related to technology, products, applications and services offered by the top national and international manufacturers and vendors.

You are invited to submit papers on any topic in cartography, geovisualisation and GIScience. You can nominate your submission to be considered for inclusion in a conference book, to be published in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, you are extended a warm invitation to participate in GeoCart'2008.

Looking forward to meeting you in Auckland, the City of Sails.

Conference Theme

The theme of GeoCart'2008 is Geospatial Vision: New Dimensions in Cartography. As the world embraces geospatial technologies with increasing enthusiasm the quantity, quality, currency and relevance of spatial information is transforming the way we can visualise our worlds. How can cartography meet the challenges of an emerging geospatial society that inhabits a dramatically changing world...?

Suggested major topics include:

    Cartographic Representation
  • 3D Cartography
  • Visualisation of Spatial Uncertainty
  • Mapping in Space and Time
  • Generalisation
  • Symbology

  • Technology-led examples in Geovisualisation and cartography
  • Maps on mobile devices
  • Virtual and Augmented Reality
  • Geovisualisation for Collaboration
  • Game-based interaction and visualisation
  • Web cartography and mapping the Web

  • Application of Cartography
  • The challenge of ubiquitous maps for everyone
  • Mountain, terrestrial, urban, coastal and marine cartography
  • Cartography in Education
  • National mapping
  • Resource mapping
  • Grassroots or Community Mapping

  • Cognition and Usability
  • Interfaces and their testing
  • Metaphors
  • Cognitive or Mental Maps
    Exploratory Geovisualisation
    Cross-cutting issues
  • Personal geographies and their mapping
  • Ubiquitous Cartographies
  • The philosophy of cartography
  • Visualisation for Spatial Decision Support (Geovisual Analytics)

These topics are by no means exclusive and any cartographically-related submission is welcomed.

Participants may also choose to submit papers directly for the SIRC proceedings, which will cover broader aspects of spatial information research. Topics include spatial modelling, ecological systems, public health and theoretical spatial research.

Call for Papers

The Scientific and Technical Programme Committee invites authors to submit abstracts, papers or posters to the GeoCart'2008 Conference and the SIRC 2008 Colloquium. We are planning two separate publications:

  1. a book and supporting CD-Rom published in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography series, which will contain the best full GeoCart'2008 papers submitted, subject to an international review process

  2. conference proceedings and supporting CD-Rom covering both the SIRC 2008 Colloquium and GeoCart'2008 Conference, which collates
    - papers accepted for SIRC
    - abstracts of the Springer papers
    - papers that did not make the book, but were accepted for either paper or poster presentation at the GeoCart'2008 Conference
    - papers and (extended) abstracts that were specifically submitted for the GeoCart'2008 Conference proceedings (either paper or poster, subject to a local review process)

Papers submitted for the book would have up to 5000 words and be formatted according to the Springer guidelines and template and be in a camera-ready state. Submission will be by email to the Chair of the Programme Committee.

If a submitted paper is accepted, one of the following will apply, depending on the results of the review:

  1. accepted for the book and oral presentation, subject to any recommendations of the reviewers and editors
  2. not accepted for the book but accepted for oral presentation at the conference and included in the conference proceedings, subject to review recommendations
  3. not accepted for the book but accepted for poster presentation at the conference and included in the conference proceedings, subject to review recommendations

Those submitting specifically for the Conference proceedings (including SIRC) and not the book, would be assigned one of the latter two decision options, subject to a local review.

Principal authors of the accepted abstracts, papers and posters are eligible for a 10% discount on the Scientific and Technical Programme registration fee.

If you wish to submit an abstract, a paper or a poster, please read GeoCart'2008 Guidelines for Authors.
