Welcome to Typography in Cartography
A MDW'2024 workshop presented by the NZ Cartographic Society
NZCS is proud to present a map design workshop to be held at Victoria University of Wellington on 19 August 2022.
MDW'2024: Typography in Cartography is designed for anyone wanting to delve into typographic terminology, explore the subjective connotations of different typefaces, and discuss effective strategies for labelling. Cartographic excellence often lies in the finer details, so we'll train our eyes to pay attention to the subtle influences that our typographic choices can have in clarifying our map's message.
Note: this course is bring your own device. Access to the internet will be provided but participants need to bring a laptop and mouse.
Overview
This workshop will interweave lectures with demonstrations and group discussion, as well as exercises in thinking critically about typeface selection and label placement. Participants will be introduced to websites that provide free access to an extensive variety of typefaces, enabling users to browse and explore styles using their browser, or download and explore with their preferred GIS software or word processor. Some exercises may also use old-fashioned paper and pencils.
Typography is both a science and an art. The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to typography and why it is critical to good cartographic design. They will learn to see the finer details of typeface choice and placement, and understand the subtle influences that typographic choices can have on a map's message.
Skill Level
General knowledge of cartography and some experience with map design is recommended. No experience with GIS software is necessary. A curious mind and desire to gain new cartographic insights and skills is absolutely required.
Workshop Presenter
Cartography for Daniel is a vocation, a bulwark against depression and anxiety, and an opportunity to write love songs to places they've never been. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, Daniel creates videos, tutorials, and other presentations geared toward demystifying not only the technical processes of cartography, but also its less-often-discussed emotional processes.
Daniel P. Huffman - Freelance Cartographer
Daniel delights in the culture of sharing that permeates the cartographic community, where we are all both teachers and learners. Their tutorials, videos, and conference presentations are usually geared toward demystifying not only the technical processes of cartography, but also its less-often-discussed emotional processes. You can find more of Daniel's work at https://somethingaboutmaps.com.
